When 19th century German immigrants first brought Christmas trees into their American homes, the neighbors took notice. Soon, candle-lit “tannenbaums” were popping up all over town! In those days, before fake trees and corner lots, fetching the perfect tree required a sharp saw and a trek into the woods. Once cut, the tree was hauled home to be decorated in time for Christmas.

Fortunately, as communities grew and nearby tree supplies dwindled, the railroads arrived. Trains provided easy access to more distant woodlands and a quick way to bring a freshly cut tree home. Entrepreneurs were quick to cash in and the Christmas tree lot was born. But, for diehards, the primal urge to “cut-it-yourself” proved irresistible. The turn-of-the-century birth of the tree farm eased access for all. Many, like the now-defunct Wagner’s Forest tree farm in Pocono Lake, Pennsylvania, had their own rail spur and station!

These days, most folks make due with sprawling multi-acre lots packed with trees cut weeks before, or pick through stockpiles of synthetic imitation trees. But for those moved by nostalgia; by the urge to rediscover a gentler, less commercialized version of holiday cheer, the tradition of selecting and cutting one’s own special Christmas tree still exists.
